Dr. Varner (warmly known as Dr. IBEX), one of the Biblical Studies' professors at The Master's College (my undergraduate alma mater), taught me unwavering passion for the life of Christ. He gave timely humor, personal involvement, authentic concern for the life of a student, clear biblical direction, consistent study, real prayer, a gentleness in spirit, and a real life for us to see beyond the classroom. Sitting in the front row, I saw authentic tears from a man personally affected by the truth of Christ, especially the passion week of Christ. The reality of Jesus, the Son of God, dying and resurrecting for the forgiveness of mankind's sins emanates from his heart. Thank you Dr. Varner for caring for God's word and people - even the humor!

- What inspired you to teach?
The idea that I could positively affect individual lives for time - and eternity! - Why do you teach the way you teach?
Because I am genuinely excited about my subject. Because why should I expect my students to be excited and committed to these truths if I am not enthusiastic about them - What teacher has had the greatest influence on you (parent, elementary teacher, pastor, professor, friend, colleague, etc.)?
Prof Tom Taylor in seminary. He was truly an ambidextrous scholar - Old and New; Hebrew and Greek; academic and pastoral. - Why was the teacher so influential?
He used humor. It kept my attention and influenced me to wisely employ humor in my own teaching. Also he taught in the classroom AND preached in churches. He saw no conflict between the Academy and the Church. That inspired me to do the same.
