Dr. Darrell Bock and Bill Hendricks switch roles in this Dallas Seminary Table podcast on Money and the Bible, where Bill Hendricks interviews Dr. Bock about what the Bible reveals about money including misconceptions like "money is the root of all kinds of evil" or "money is a necessary evil." Dr. Bock helpfully answers by connecting biblical passages, theology, history, and contemporary life.
Dr. Bock makes the main point that "theology is relevant," and how incredibly true. When we realize that God is the epicenter to the world and then even our life, we then relent and recognize it is no longer our life but His working through us to steward or manage aspects of life like money. In doing so then "the love of money" becomes distinguished and replaced with "the love of God is the root of all kinds of good" (cf. 1 Timothy 6:10).
In light of that, Dr. Bock points out that God wants humanity to repent and deal with one another differently including the work place and environment. "Money is a resource to steward held in open hands" Dr. Bock states and we are to become generous as God has become generous with his world. God calls and transforms our hearts to love because he is loving. Ultimately, God has used his created world to love others. Therefore, are we believing, thinking, and acting accordingly -- to love.
Dr. Bock ends with a challenge for those who are wealthy in money to be like other examples who have applied Paul's words from 1 Timothy 6:17-19, "As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.”
